Charles,
Thanks so much for your question - that's a great point you make! You can call a Web Service using a "Process" in ApEx. The Web Service itself is what does the update to the DB. OBIEE allows you to create Web Services that query data. You could hand develop a Web Service that updates the data using JDeveloper for example. JDeveloper will allow you to expose a PL/SQL package as a Web Service. So you could write a PL/SQL package that does an update, then write a Web Service that calls the PL/SQL package. The other option is to use TUSC's iPerspective product, which will expose CRUD (create, read, update and delete) services for any table in the database. If you're interested in more information about iPerspective, please send me an email at brad@tusc.com and I'll make sure we get you what you're looking for!
Thanks!

Bradley,
I'm trying to use apex that is sitting outside the firewall to hit a obiee web server that will host the web services so i can hit any database. I'm trying to figure out how to get APEX to update, insert or delete data in a database table using web services. Do you have any examples or suggestions on this?

You might also want to mention Rackspace. They now offer a cloud service.

It might also be worth noting that Ubuntu now comes with a VM architecture that is based on the Amazon EC2 AMI (Amazon Machine Image). This makes it so you can run AMIs on your own hardware.

Mr Brown,
I am just a student looking for some post undergrad GIS training and certification. I work for Quik Trip convenience stores in the Atlanta Georgia area and I know That the company is gearing up to expand its Location Analysis efforts to improve the companies growth. Its retail analysis and modeling need a serious 'kick'. QT is one of the few companies experiencing growth in the market. Can you suggest someone or some program in the Atlanta area that would be an improvement to the online Penn State GIS program I am currently enrolled in? I intend to be that next Business Intelligence Analyst (when the company wakes up and actually creates thw position) !

Google's Fusion Tables are currently lacking in visualization area. IBM's Many Eyes and Many Eyes wikified offer much better visualizations - even with live data (e.g. RSS feeds).

However, one issue with Many Eyes is that you can not modify the dataset once it is uploaded. You can delete and upload a new set, but there is no concept of collaboratively editing a dataset. Which is one thing I like about Google's Fusion Tables
